We will be in Makarora for about a week, but then we will have to backtrack. Had to modify our next weeks plans, as a bridge was washed out near Fox glacier. So instead of heading to the NW coast we’ll be heading to Dunedin to take in the big city! The Fox glacier area got around 300mm of rain in a day or so, which raised the water level in the river about 7.5 meters.

We are staying in a very comfortable renovated cabin on a working farm. Thousands of cattle, deer, and sheep. Even Himalayan Tahr for hunting. But we’ve got fresh eggs courtesy of the chickens, and fresh baked bread courtesy of the caretaker. The cabin is set up as a large studio, about 120 square meters. (1200 sq feet) No cell phone service, but wifi is supposed to work most of the time, although slowly.

Davis Flat Trail
Makarora, Davis Flat trail
We headed off on the Davis Flat/Haast pass lookout trail today. A relatively short, easy hike along the river. Lots of moss making the trail look like an enchanted forest.

Blue Pools Hike
Makarora, Blue pools
Deb decided to hike a portion of the Blue Pools Track on her own one day, then Tim joined me the next day to go further up the Young valley.

Makarora, Purple mushroom
We ran into these tiny purple mushrooms, found out later they are called pouch fungus. In looking these up, I found out they also have blue, cap type mushrooms. Will have to keep an eye out for those.

Lots of interesting mushrooms in NZ, here’s another.
